A letter from John Gayle dated August 2, 1847 Jones Co., Mississippi to William Lewis, Ordinary of Sumter, SC: "I am the only living heir and representative of Ambrose Gayle......Willis Ramsey informed me, Mr. Brunston who married my sister Sarah Gayle had made application as a claimant, he has no claim whatever. They were living with me at Cane Savannah when she died, and I can vouch for the fact that she left no living children." (Sumter Bundle 42, 10).
John Gayle bought August, 1819, from John J. Moore, 100 acres near Cane Savannah, bound N - said John J. Moore, E - Isaac Brunson, S - John J. Banister, W - said J. J. Moore (Sumter Conv. EE, 344). Dr. John Gayle married on April 18, 1816 Elizabeth, daughter of Willis Ramsey (Sumter Roll 106-107). On the 1820 Sumter Census, in John Gayle's household, only John, Elizabeth and two females under 10 years old.
Comments: From the above it appears that the Brunsons lived with Gayle after the 1820 Census. Gayle and his wife separated in 1822, reconciled and then separated again in 1826 (Sumter Roll 412). Perhaps after 1826, the Brunsons moved in. Whoever this Brunson was, he was apparently alive in Sumter District in 1847. Sometime between the 1783 and 1785 Tax Lists, Ambrose Gayle married Levineah Tynes. Sarah would have been born sometime between 1784 - 1794. |
