TOUCHBERRY SUMMERTON – Gary Lyle Touchberry, 57, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 6, 2008, with his mother by his side. He was born Dec. 11, 1950, in Sumter and was a lifelong resident of Summerton, a son of the late J.T. Touchberry Jr., and Janet Touchberry Trembley. He was a lifelong member of Summerton Baptist Church, which he joined at an early age, and was a member of the Mims-Skelley-Wells Sunday school class. He attended Summerton public schools and graduated from Clarendon Hall. In addition, he attended classes at the University of South Carolina Sumter. He was a certified master ceramics instructor and provided many cherished ceramics to numerous family and friends. He was a loving and devoted son, brother and uncle. He delighted and enjoyed the many family functions of the Touchberry and McLeod families. He especially enjoyed and doted on his nephews, Jay, Matthew and Brian. He also loved the Summerton Diner and its employees, where he was well-known and treated like family. He is survived by his mother, Janet Touchberry Trembley of Morningside Assisted Living in Sumter; a brother, Jackson T. Touchberry and his wife, Joanne, of Wake Forest, N.C.; nephews, Jay Touchberry of Poquoson, Va., Matthew Touchberry and his wife, Jenny, of Chapin, and Brian Buker of Wake Forest, N.C.; three great-nephews; a great-niece; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, J.T. Touchberry Jr. Services will be held at Summerton Baptist Church on Wednesday beginning with visitation at 10 a.m. in the church fellowship hall, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. in the church sanctuary. Burial will follow in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be his nephews, Jay, Matt and Brian, along with his friend Robert Villie. Flowers accepted or memorials in Gary's honor may be made to the Mims-Skelley-Wells Sunday School Class, c/o Summerton Baptist Church, P.O. Box 98, Summerton, SC 29148.
