- Thomas Osteen was a soldier in the American Revolution who came to Sumter County from Eastern North Carolina and settled near Bethel Baptist Church which is what is now Privateer Township. He later moved west and settled near Nanchez, Mississippi. Thomas lived on the Pamlico River in North Carolina with his father Henry Osteen until he came to South Carolina in 1773 or 1774. Thomas' son Jacob was a small child at that time. Thomas Osteen's wife was Rachael Pritchard Of Pamlico (County?), NC. (The Sumter Daily Item, Sumter, SC November 9, 1936.)

I had previously found information on the LDS web site that stated William (b. abt. 1740 in NC) is the son of Thomas O'Steen (b. Craven NC) and Rachel Pritchard. I just looked at the same site tonight and could not find this very record.
The LDS also shows that Thomas Osteen (b. abt. 1725 in Craven, NC) was married to Rachel Pritchard and was the son of Henry O'Steen (b.<1699 Craven, NC) and Margaret McCulough (b. abt. 1703 in Craven, NC). The information was submitted by:

I found the following information on the Carteret County Web Site:
Muster Roll of Col. Thomas Lovick's Regiment 1747 for the Regiment of Soldiers of Carteret County under the command of Col. Thomas Lovick. Company commanded by Capt. Moses Houston. From the South West side of Newport River to the East side of the White Oak River.
There is a Henry, John and Samuel O'Steen included in the list of soldiers. There is also an Edmund and Thomas Austin Jr. in the same muster. (Note: O'Steens and Austins have been used interchangeably in various sources)
The Carteret County web site also listed a reference to a Jun 1759 orphan, Seletha Osteen, no age given (Matthew Moore requests guardianship, court orders it).
There is a land sale record in the RECORDS OF CRAVEN COUNTY NC VOLUME 1 by Elizabeth Moore (1960) pg. 33 & 34 that in 1747, Apr. 4, John Tindal sells to Thomas Osteen 100 acres on the east side of Cammels Creek on the west side of Smith's Creek, beginning near John Mayo's line..... side of Old House Creek (James Campen and John Mayo, Sr. and Jr., witnesses) B2.
Hopefully, some of the above information will help to uncover additional details. If someone lives anywhere close to Craven County North Carolina perhaps they could look for other documents.
