By JASON WERMERS Item Staff Writer jwermers@theitem.com An elderly couple were found dead in the Dutch Branch Road house Monday evening. Maj. Hampton Gardner of the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office said a relative from outside the area called and asked that they be checked on. They were found shortly before 9 p.m. in the house. Gardner said there was no sign of forced entry at their home, 2690 Dutch Branch Road, and that a weapon was not present. “We understand the couple may have had health issues,” Gardner said, adding that an autopsy would be scheduled as soon as possible. The couple’s identities were not released pending notification of family. The sight of a line of marked and unmarked sheriff’s vehicles, fire trucks and Sumter County Emergency Medical Service vehicles shocked residents of Dutch Branch Road and Bayside Drive off of Pitts Road. Concerned neighbors waited outside the yellow crime tape hoping for good news that never came. “It’s an undescribable feeling,” said Anne Hayes, 34, a neighbor of the elderly couple. “You know how they say when someone breaks into your house, you feel violated? Well, it’s the same thing when it’s something like this in your neighborhood.” Hayes and other neighbors said the man took good care of his wife and often was seen riding around in a golf cart. The couple were discovered less than three hours after Harvin Bullock was sworn in as Sumter County’s new coroner. He was at the scene, still dressed in the suit he wore to the swearing-in ceremony that had been held at 6 p.m. at Patriot Hall.
