Harry C. "H.C." Pritchard Jr., 85, died Friday, Feb. 6, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center following a courageous battle with cancer and most recently complications following surgery to remove blood clots on his brain. Born May 3, 1923, in Paxville, H.C. was the oldest of seven children born to the late Harry Cuttino Pritchard Sr. and the late Iva Corrine Brown Pritchard. Mr. Pritchard accepted Christ as his Savior at an early age due to the loving example set by his parents who always stressed the importance of trusting God and serving Him their children. He grew up as a member of Bethel Baptist Church. In his early twenties, he, his wife and children became charter members of Southside Baptist Church. In the early 1960's he and his family were asked to step out on faith and become part of a mission church named Westside Baptist that was sponsored by Southside. In recent years, he and his wife joined Crosswell Baptist Church where they remained faithful servants of God until this recent illness. During the time he attended each of these churches, he served the Lord faithfully as a deacon and chairman of the deacons. He also served on the finance committee, nominating committee, several building committees, pastor search committees, was a Sunday school teacher, Brotherhood Leader, and even helped out in the nursery. He was an asset and inspiration to everyone he came in contact with as a member of these congregations and especially to the everyday people he came in contact with throughout his life. After returning home from serving his country in World War II, H.C. became the owner and operator of Pritchard's Garage. He had the reputation of being one of the finest auto mechanics in this area. He owned and operated the garage from 1946 to 1999 when he turned the operation over to his oldest son, Harry. H.C. was known as an honest and caring business man who always went above and beyond the call of duty by keeping the cars in Sumter running in tip top shape. H.C. was well known in Sumter and throughout North and South Carolina where he competed in what was known then as the Limited Sportsman division of stock car racing. He began here in the Sumter area at the first dirt quarter mile track built in the Bethel community and later at the track which still stands in the Wedgefield community. He also competed at tracks in Myrtle Beach, Columbia, Hartsville, Ashwood, Greenville-Pickens and Savannah, Ga. He competed against the likes of Ralph Earnhardt, Bobby Isaac, Buck Baker, Fireball Roberts, Ned Jarrett, Charleton McLeod, Liz Singletary, Ray McCoy, and Junior and Cecil Johnson. H.C. won a number of points championships at the local track and finished in the top therein the Limited Sportsman division, known now as the Nationwide division in NASCAR. He was often heard saying his greatest enjoyment in racing came each week after the race was over and he would offer rides around the track to all the children in the grandstands, making sure everyone had the chance to ride in a real racecar. One of his greatest honors came in 1994 when he became the first racecar driver inducted into the Sumter County Sports Hall of Fame. Survivors include his wife, Annie Frierson Pritchard, they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on Chistmas Eve 2008; four children, Phyllis Andrews (James) of Florence, Harriett Barrineau (Al) and Harry Pritchard (Alice), both of Sumter, and Myron Pritchard (Jan) of Conway; seven grandchildren, Curtis Barrineau, Brent Barrineau, Brian Barrineau, Kevin Andrews, Kim Price, Chris Barrineau and Lauren Pritchard; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Mr. Pritchard is also survived by two sisters, Dorothy Logan of Sumter, and Betty Smith of Camden; one brother, Richard L. Pritchard (Brenda) of New Bern, N.C; and a number of special nephews and nieces who seemed just as much his own children as his actual four. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Harvey Pritchard, Cecil Pritchard and Russell Pritchard; father-in-law, Darby Frierson; and mother-in-law, Bessie Frierson. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Elmore-Cannon- Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday in the sanctuary of Crosswell Baptist Church, 602 Mathis St., with the Rev. Charles Owens and the Rev. Dr. James Goodroe officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Flowers are welcome or contributions may be made to the Crosswell Baptist Church Building Fund or to the Annie Armstrong Offering c/o Crosswell Baptist Church. The family would like to especially express their love and appreciation to Dr. Leland McElveen and his staff at the SC Oncology Association. Also thank you to the oncology nurses at Palmetto Baptist Hospital, and to Dr. Philip Brandt, who has been both friend and physician to Dad. II Timothy 4:7 best describes Daddy's life – "I have fought the fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."
